Position Summary
- The Carpenter is responsible for performing maintenance tasks necessary to preserve the buildings and grounds of Weeks Medical Center and to maintain the service equipment and systems in a safe, clean and operational condition. This position requires a willingness to work weekends, nights, and holidays as necessary, also having?ability to work well with other and on his / her own.
Qualifications
- Minimum of two years' experience in the hospital maintenance field.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- High School Graduate or equivalent GED.
- Requires practical experience in mechanical trades. Must have knowledge of measuring and testing equipment, hand and power tools, and electrical equipment.
- Must have basic knowledge of the following:
- Boilers and associated systems
- Electrical, ventilation and air conditioning systems
- Plumbing, carpentry and painting
- Hospital gases and gas system
- Basic knowledge of applicable safety engineering codes
Essential Functions of the Job
- Must be able to read and understand basic blueprint and technical drawings in order to fabricate both common and unique casework and structures using a wide variety of materials, including but not limited to, plywood, plexiglass, domitar panel, Lexan, hard - soft wood lumber, Masonite, Formica, masonry material and steel framing.
- Work on assigned building and remodeling construction projects, reviews and evaluates blueprints and technical drawings and makes recommendations and comments to the?Facilities Manager / Supervisor?of Support Services prior to and during the construction phase.
- Must be able to perform assigned construction work duties according to blueprints, such as but not limited to, Installation of cabinets, work stations, various types of counter top, chair/handrail, sealing penetrations in fire/smoke barriers accordance with NFPA codes and standards, sheet rocking and applying sheetrock joint compound to quality finish, laying out and installing suspended grid style ceilings, installing door jambs and hanging doors, installing window jambs and installing glass, laying out and installing floors of all types, performing proper subfloor prep such as stripping, cleaning, applying vapor barrier and leveling with proper/approved material, installing vinyl wall base, installs structural support steel such as unistrut and welding structures and performs a wide variety of demolition work, taking down walls, ceilings and tearing up flooring, assisting with door and hardware repair, assisting with concrete installation and repair.?
- Perform routine scheduled Preventative Maintenance work and daily rounding according to established procedures, including but not limited to, replacing broken or stained ceiling tile and grid work, repairing damaged wallboard paneling, replacing damaged vinyl floor tile and wall base, adjusting, repairing or replacing door hardware such as locksets, closures and hinges, also checks and repairs safety and handicapped hardware like grab bars and handrails. Continually monitors the conditions of the buildings and hardware and makes recommendations for changes or improvements such as increased or decreased time and rotation on PM cards, changes in tasks performed on PM cards, suggests effective correction action to reduce costly long- and short-term repairs.
- Perform assigned work order requests from various Medical Center departments, such as but not limited to, fabricating and installing oak, plywood and domitar shelving using adjustable style brackets and standards, installing a wide variety of bulletin boards, display cases, pictures and many other wall mounted items using style anchoring system(s). Fabricating and installing bookcases, formica countertops, wall and base cabinetry. Responsible for repairing chairs, tables and other furniture, repairs and replace window treatments. Installs and repairs a wide variety of roofing systems such as fiberglass shingle and firestone sheet rubber.
- Prepare estimates of labor and material for proposed Work Orders and construction projects and makes recommendations to the Facilities Manager / Supervisor for new or improved materials or methods of construction.
- Continually reviews shop and project materials and supplies and advises Director of Support Services of needs in order to complete Work Order, PM cards and projects.
- Adhere to and enforces all safety, building and construction codes and standards required by the Hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Particular attention must be given to personal safety, life safety and fire safety policies. Monitors and reports any observed unsafe practices and situations. Ensure all fire barriers, smoke barriers, doors, ceiling tiles, corridors, etc. are compliant with NFPA/ADA codes and standards.
- Perform routine cleaning of work areas all work areas within patient and staff areas must be picked up and clear of tools and debris before leaving for the day. All workshops/storage areas must be cleaned and organized during and at the end of each project before any other projects are performed.? Adheres to Weeks Medical Center and departmental housekeeping practices, removing all waste and debris generated through normal work tasks and disposes of them properly into designated containers per WMC Waste plan.
- Must be able to operate power tools such as, skill saws, drills, core drills, jack hammers, laser transit, table saw, planer, band saw, jointer, radial arm saws, chop saw and powder actuated nail gun. Also must be able to set up and work from scaffolding, staging, various ladders, telescopic boom lift and scissor lifts.
- Perform other duties to include, but not be limited to: weekend and off-hour coverage, assigning in emergency situations, assistance to other trades when necessary, and snow removal.
- Ability to maintain good record keeping using electronic and conventional means of documentation. Adapt to new electronic work order systems and means of communication.?
- Must be able to take required MOAB/De-escalation training to be able to assist in behavioral situations. Along with elective courses assigned by Facilities Manager/Supervisor.?
- Performs other duties as required and/or assigned.
