Job Description
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) plays a vital role in delivering quality patient care under the supervision of healthcare providers in a medical office setting. The CMA is responsible for performing clinical and administrative tasks to support the efficient operation of the office, ensuring compassionate and effective service to patients. By fulfilling these responsibilities, the Certified Medical Assistant contributes to the overall patient experience and supports the medical team in delivering exceptional healthcare services
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
Certification:
- Current certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from a recognized certifying body (e.g., AAMA, AMT, NCCT, NHA).
Licensure:
- Association* accredited course in Basic Life Support (BLS) (for clinical staff), or Heartsaver CPR AED (for nonclinical staff), and renewal on a regular basis, with up to a three-month grace period after the expiration date.
Skills:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Proficient in electronic medical records (EMR) and office software.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
- Compassionate patient care skills and attention to detail.
Work Experience:
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a clinical setting preferred.
- Experience in a medical office environment is an advantage.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assist healthcare providers with patient examinations and procedures, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Obtain and record patient vital signs, medical history, and current medications accurately in EMR systems.
- Prepare examination rooms, ensuring all necessary supplies and equipment are available and sanitized.
- Administer medications and vaccinations as directed by healthcare providers and in accordance with established protocols.
- Perform routine laboratory tests and specimen collection, including blood draws and swabs, following proper procedures.
- Schedule patient appointments, follow-ups, and referrals, coordinating effectively with other healthcare facilities.
- Educate patients and their families on health maintenance, disease prevention, and treatment plans as instructed by the provider.
- Handle patient inquiries both in person and over the phone, providing appropriate information or directing them to the correct healthcare personnel.
- Maintain and update patient records, ensuring all documentation is accurate, complete, and up-to-date.
- Assist in the management of inventory for medical supplies, ordering and restocking as needed.
- Collaborate with office staff to ensure smooth clinic operations and effective patient flow.
- Follow infection control policies and procedures to maintain a safe and clean work environment.
- Coordinate with insurance companies for processing claims and obtaining pre-authorizations for procedures.
- Participate in ongoing education and training to stay current with best practices and industry standards.
- Perform administrative duties such as billing, filing, and data entry as required by the office manager.
