Job Description
The Pharmacy Technician II plays a crucial role in supporting pharmacy operations by performing complex technical tasks. Responsibilities include preparing IV admixtures, managing inventory, and ensuring safe medication distribution. The role requires independence and accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a recognized Pharmacy Technician training program.
Licensure:
- Valid Pharmacy Technician registration and current certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or equivalent.
- Association* accredited course in Basic Life Support (BLS) (for clinical staff), or Heartsaver CPR AED (for nonclinical staff), and renewal on a regular basis, with up to a three-month grace period after the expiration date.
Skills:
- Proficiency in pharmacy operations and inventory management.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to perform pharmaceutical calculations.
- Familiarity with pharmacy software systems.
Work Experience:
- At least two years of pharmacy technician experience, with some knowledge of IV admixture preparation preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Accurately fill and prepare IV admixtures, ensuring correct calculations and safe mixing procedures.
- Maintain inventory of narcotics, track orders, and manage dispensing and return records.
- Prepare and replenish floor stock orders, ensuring adequate supply levels.
- Assist in compiling and verifying patient medication information for specialized needs.
- The technician will fill medication orders for delivery to floors based on pharmacist-generated labels. All medications pulled for patient administration require verification by a pharmacist or Supervising Tech (Level 4), if tech-check-tech validated processes are in place within the facility.
- Collaborate with healthcare staff to resolve medication order discrepancies.
- Deliver medications to inpatient units, verifying and updating orders as needed.
- Perform inspections of storage areas to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Train and support new pharmacy technicians and interns on technical duties.
- Implement and maintain internal accountability procedures for pharmaceuticals.
- Provide customer service by answering inquiries and resolving issues at the counter.
- Participate in quality control procedures, ensuring the integrity of pharmacy operations.
- Operate and maintain automated pharmacy equipment efficiently.
- Manage returns and credits for unused unit dose medications.
- Maintain a clean, organized work area and ensure the proper labeling of medications.
