Job Description

The Pharmacy Technician II plays a crucial role in supporting pharmacy operations by performing complex technical tasks. Responsibilities include preparing IV admixtures, managing inventory, and ensuring safe medication distribution. The role requires independence and accuracy in a fast-paced environment.

 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a recognized Pharmacy Technician training program.

Licensure:

  • Valid Pharmacy Technician registration and current certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or equivalent.
  • Association* accredited course in Basic Life Support (BLS) (for clinical staff), or Heartsaver CPR AED (for nonclinical staff), and renewal on a regular basis, with up to a three-month grace period after the expiration date.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in pharmacy operations and inventory management.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to perform pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Familiarity with pharmacy software systems.

Work Experience:

  • At least two years of pharmacy technician experience, with some knowledge of IV admixture preparation preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Accurately fill and prepare IV admixtures, ensuring correct calculations and safe mixing procedures.
  2. Maintain inventory of narcotics, track orders, and manage dispensing and return records.
  3. Prepare and replenish floor stock orders, ensuring adequate supply levels.
  4. Assist in compiling and verifying patient medication information for specialized needs.
  5. The technician will fill medication orders for delivery to floors based on pharmacist-generated labels. All medications pulled for patient administration require verification by a pharmacist or Supervising Tech (Level 4), if tech-check-tech validated processes are in place within the facility.
  6. Collaborate with healthcare staff to resolve medication order discrepancies.
  7. Deliver medications to inpatient units, verifying and updating orders as needed.
  8. Perform inspections of storage areas to ensure compliance with safety standards.
  9. Train and support new pharmacy technicians and interns on technical duties.
  10. Implement and maintain internal accountability procedures for pharmaceuticals.
  11. Provide customer service by answering inquiries and resolving issues at the counter.
  12. Participate in quality control procedures, ensuring the integrity of pharmacy operations.
  13. Operate and maintain automated pharmacy equipment efficiently.
  14. Manage returns and credits for unused unit dose medications.
  15. Maintain a clean, organized work area and ensure the proper labeling of medications.
