POSITION SUMMARY

The Clinical Laboratory Assistant is responsible for administrative support to the NCH System Director of Clinical Laboratories and

functions as overall assistant to the department in areas of technical and non-technical support, quality improvement, quality

concerns, service recovery, specimen collection, and LIS order entry. Works closely with phlebotomy staff to train on lab

procedures and backs up the histology lead tech for processing of histology specimens.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education:

High School Graduate or equivalent GED, Associate Degree preferred

Licensure/Certification(s):

Must be BLS certified

Skills:

Proficient in use of Laboratory Information Systems, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word

Proficient medical terminology

English speaking and writing skills required / preferred

Work Experience:

Minimum of one-year experience as a phlebotomist


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Maintains Standing order file and sends yearly update standing order questionnaires.

2. Assists in quality improvement/Press Ganey projects and initiatives and helps follow up on quality concerns submitted by other

departments.

3. Performs service recovery by continuously researching and identifying solutions for improved customer care.

4. Communicates corrective measures with patients and/or providers in collaboration with manager or lead tech when necessary.

5. Reports on the quality initiatives and Press Gainey scores during staff meetings.

6. Reviews fax numbers for outside physicians and initiates corrections as needed.

7. Ensures adequate supplies for blood/specimen collection and that areas are well stocked.

Verifies the identity of the patient being drawn and labels all specimens properly. Demonstrates age specific knowledge for

procedure being performed.

8. Collects STAT and Urgent specimens within the established time frames. Uses Laboratory Information System (LIS), Microsoft Word

and Microsoft Excel appropriately and efficiently.

9. Collects blood and urine samples, correctly identifies patients, transports specimens and accessions specimens into the Laboratory

Information System (LIS).

10. Corrects charges and Dates of Service when necessary or as requested by billing department. Follows up with providers to clarify

questionable orders.

11. The Laboratory Assistant also answers the telephone and provides technical and non-technical support to all laboratory personnel.

Trains and oversees Phlebotomy staff. Oversees Histology area as a backup for Histology Lead. Keeps Histology charges, logs, send

out specimens in order as a backup for Histology tech. Procures specimens from off-site facilities as needed. During times of need

will act as special coordinator / organizer for special testing logistics / needs.

12. Ensures and maintains proper inventories of supplies.

13. Fulfills supply orders from outlying clinics in a timely fashion.

14. Keeps an orderly and well-maintained work area stocked with necessary supplies.

15. Manages time effectively to ensure that deadlines are met and that personal priorities support organizational objectives.

16. Performs other duties as requested and functions as Administrative Assistant to Director.
