POSITION SUMMARY:
The Medical-Surgical Nursing Department Manager is responsible for overseeing the operational and clinical aspects of the medical-surgical unit. The Manager will promote the organization's vision, mission, and values, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centered care. This role includes managing staff, resources, and budgets while integrating evidence-based practices and fostering an environment of continuous improvement and professional development.
The Medical-Surgical Nursing Department Manager should be a professional advocate for patients, maintaining their privacy and confidentiality, while also pursuing professional growth through participation in relevant organizations and initiatives. This position requires a leader who is committed to enhancing team performance, patient experience, and overall service quality within the medical-surgical unit. The Medical-Surgical Nursing Department Manager would be multifaced as a working nurse and manager with a schedule outlined in the capacity of two 8-hour office/administrative shifts and two 12-hour nursing shifts on the floor with patients and staff.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing is required.
- Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related field is preferred.
Licensure:
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of practice is required.
- ACLS and PALS required
Skills:
- Strong leadership and managerial skills.
- Proficient in communication, consultation, negotiation, and collaboration.
- Competence in evidence-based practice integration and quality improvement.
- Analytical skills for data collection and performance evaluation.
- Effective conflict resolution techniques.
Work Experience:
- Minimum of five years of experience in medical surgical nursing with progressive leadership roles.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Promote the vision, mission, and values of the organization within the medical-surgical department.
- Manage the medical-surgical unit operationally and fiscally, ensuring efficient resource allocation.
- Schedule requirements of working manager to be outlined in the capacity of two 8-hour office/administrative shifts and two 12-hour shifts on the floor.
- Ensure that nursing personnel provide safe, effective, patient-centered care.
- Incorporate evidence-based knowledge in decision-making processes to enhance patient care.
- Assist nursing staff with integrating evidence-based practices into their daily routines.
- Evaluate nursing practices and develop strategies for continuous improvement.
- Plan and deliver educational programs for nursing personnel to attend based on education department.
- Act as a clinical resource, supporting the development of clinical competencies.
- Facilitate and monitor compliance with organizational policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
- Mentor team members, offering guidance, support, and constructive feedback as needed.
- Coordinate and manage the implementation of change within the unit and the organization.
- Conduct interviews and participate in the selection process for nursing personnel.
- Collect and analyze data related to quality improvement and performance evaluation projects.
- Promote workplace safety and ensure adherence to privacy and confidentiality standards.
