Medical Technologist
Job Description
Position Summary
The medical technologist's primary responsibilities involve the testing of blood, body fluids and other specimen samples submitted to the laboratory for analysis. Phlebotomy, running and evaluation of quality controls, participation in proficiency testing and calibration verification surveys are also expected.
Position Requirements
Education:
Must possess a Bachelor of Science degree that meets the academic requirements of the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or fulfills the academic and experience components specified by recognized accrediting agencies and is certified or must be certified within one year of hire by either ASCP,AMT, ISC LT, HHS, or NCA in the Laboratory Technologist category (MT, C LT, CLS, MLS).
Skills:
Basic computer literacy and experience with laboratory information systems is preferred. Must demonstrate good patient manner and possess the ability to effectively communicate with patients.
Essential Functions
- Performs phlebotomy on inpatient, out-patient and emergency department patients as needed
- Performs routine, special diagnostic and quality control procedures in all laboratory disciplines
- Performs bacteriology procedures including reading of plates, identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing of suspect pathogens.
- Performs all testing for urinalysis/feces, serology, and immunology utilizing appropriate kits and instrumentation.
- Performs testing in blood bank including the detection of unexpected antibody presence.
- Performs testing through the utilization of analyzers in clinical chemistry, hematology and coagulation.
- Recognizes and corrects errors and defects that may occur in the performance of laboratory testing.
- Participates in the development of protocols and in the evaluation and selection of equipment.
- Is familiar with the use, operation, maintenance and minor repair of laboratory instrumentation.
- Is proficient in the utilization of the general laboratory applications of laboratory information systems
- Assesses the patient for risk or potential of neglect or abuse. Makes referrals as appropriate.
- Complies with documentation requirements and other standards put forth by the regulatory and certifying agencies.
- Always observes standard precautions
- Understands and complies with facility and departmental regulations regarding the handling and disposal of infectious and hazardous materials.
